Eco-Friendly or Just Talk? A 60-Second Greenwashing Check

08 May 2026

Every brand calls themselves "eco-friendly" now. Some are real. Most are not. Here is how Tapo checks before believing anyone — including ourselves.

5 Red Flags

  1. "Biodegradable" with no standard. Real claim: EN 13432 or ASTM D6400. No number = greenwash.
  2. Self-made green leaf logo. If it is not PEFC, TÜV or DIN — it is a sticker, not a cert.
  3. "100% natural" with no breakdown. Plastic is also "natural" from oil. Demand material list.
  4. "Compostable" without home vs industrial split. Big difference. Industrial needs 60°C composting facility — most of Malaysia tak ada.
  5. No third-party cert URL. Real certs are publicly verifiable. Ask, then check.

The 4 Cert Numbers Worth Trusting

EN 13432 (industrial compost) · TÜV OK Compost HOME (home compost) · FDA 21 CFR 176.170 (food-safe paper) · PEFC (sustainable forestry). Anything else = read fine print.
